5 Ways on How To Cope With Everyday Stress

How to cope with stress? It’s not always a simple question to answer. Stress is not always easy to cope with nowadays. We live in such a fast-paced world that we don’t even know how to stop and assess the situation.

I’m no expert in the field of stress. Still, I could almost guarantee we live with more pressure now than we ever have before. With technology bringing us closer than ever, it brings along different stressors. However, that doesn’t mean they are impossible to cope with.

I’ve come up with a five-step approach to deal with stress. It might not work for everyone, but I have found it to be successful for me and my lifestyle.

For me, I have issues with anxiety that I deal with regularly. Sometimes these high anxiety situations only last a few days while others can last months. It’s almost impossible to explain how this feels to someone who has never gone through it.

I recently discussed this breakdown in an article about giving your mental health a break and how crucial our mental health is to our everyday lives.

That being said, we do ALL have stresses. If not dealt with, these stresses could eventually lead to anxiety. This is why I use this approach each time I feel stress coming on in my life.

Again, each situation is different.

I am not an expert in this field. I would always encourage that, if you cannot find peace in your day to day life, to seek counsel. Whether it be a friend or professional, there is nothing wrong with needing help.

We all need it; we sometimes are too afraid to ask. You can still try these tactics out and see if they work. None of these are detrimental to your health if they do not ease stress.

For me, I have found that these five tips have improved my day to day living immensely. I hope they can do the same for someone else.

Use a breathing technique or meditation to cope with stress.

The first thing to do in a stressful situation is to breathe. By practicing deep breathing techniques it can help improve your mind and your mood.

There are so many articles and classes out there that teach proper procedures in this field. Alternatively, take a few deep breathes slowly (through the nose and out the mouth). Sometimes that is all we need to calm down.

You can also take this practice into meditation. I recently picked up mindful meditation, and it has transformed my life. I know it is not for everyone, but there is definite proof that meditation can help ease stress and anxiety levels.

Each night before bed, I’ll listen to a meditation podcast and, afterward, I always feel calm and tranquil. Again, there are various practices out there for each person. Find what works best for you. Even if you can only dedicate five minutes a day, it genuinely does help.

Another form of meditation that is more physical is yoga. I do a 10-minute yoga stretch each morning with my fiance. Not only does this help wake me up and stretch my body, but it has also been very therapeutic.

  • Improve posture
  • Help in weight loss and muscle tone
  • Improve mental calmness and clarity

Use the Timeline Method.

I’ve used this technique since I was a teenager in high school worrying about homework assignments (I wish that were my only struggles now). When you are in the middle of a stressful situation, ask yourself if it is something to worry about genuinely.

Will this moment affect you in five days? What about five months? A year? Sometimes putting it into perspective like this helps you to realize it is not worth worrying about logically.

This technique doesn’t always work, but it is an excellent method to keep in the back of your mind. I usually pair this with another plan to help put my thoughts at ease. Sometimes we need that knowledge that the stress we have is too minuscule to let it ruin our day.

When in doubt, distract until your stress is out.

I’m not a massive advocate on this for the fact that the stress will still be there. I use this method only when I cannot get out of my head. If I’m stressing too much on something, I will stop what I’m doing and start another task that brings me joy (or at least keeps me busy).

I cannot tell you how many times I have organized my entire home because I was trying to forget what I was worried about at that moment.

Again, this isn’t a cure for stress. It can sometimes help dissipate the situation if it is small enough, but usually, your worry will still be there. I do think this is beneficial for the fact that it gets you out of your head for a little bit.

Sometimes stress becomes empowered when we overthink. By stepping away from the situation, we can go back to it with some much-needed clarity.

5 Simple Ways to Cope With Everyday Stress in Your Life

Identify the reason behind the stress.

This tactic is obviously one of the best ways to help you cope with stress. Instead of distracting yourself, you are walking into the eye of the storm.

By identifying why you are stressed and what put you in that situation, you can start to fix the problem. I use this when I’m writing. If I’m getting stressed at deadlines and a lack of motivation, I’ll ask myself why I feel this way.

Is it because I didn’t give myself enough time to get something done?

If that is the case, I’ll plan on waking up earlier to get the task completed. If the stress is over money, I’ll come up with a way to make more. By identifying the issue, you can start to create a plan of action to eliminate that stressor.

Sometimes, however, it can be challenging to figure out the origin of your stress, making it difficult to cope with. We might be enraged over something, not because it made us angry, but because something two days ago is on our mind.

Identifying your stressor requires contemplation and a look inward. In the back of our heads, we can usually determine what is really making us stress out. Still, we sometimes need to take a few moments to find that specific feeling.

By utilizing the other steps in this guide, you can help calm yourself down enough to identify the stress and adequately cope with it.

Whether it is a scribble or a novel, start writing.

I know not everyone likes writing, but it is an excellent method to help cope with stress. There are so many ways you can use this to your advantage.

For instance, you could start a journal. Sometimes we need to get our thoughts on paper so that it is not jumbled up and confusing. Writing it down can clear out your head so you can focus on what is essential.

You can also use this method to write down lists and plans of action. Once you identify why you are stressing out, write down what you can do to change. I’m a fan of this technique because it gives me goals to conquer, and nothing feels better than crossing off a task.

I recently had some stress about my finances. I let it overtake my emotions until I was in complete despair.

Instead of letting it ruin my day, I got out a notepad and started writing. I made a list of all the things I owe and, once I found a total, came up with a list of things I can do to fix the problem. By just doing this, I felt better immediately.

Sometimes writing down goals, lists, and habits can make you feel in control of the situation. A lot of the time, we start feeling anxiety or stress because we don’t feel in control of the situation. By coming up with a game plan you can read on paper, you feel more controlled of your life.

It doesn’t matter how you write it down, but you need to put it on paper.
