I am a lover of meat, rice, and salt, which made this Korean beef bowl one of the staples in my house. My fiance and I make this for dinner regularly, and it is always followed by sounds of approval. Not only is it delicious, but this Korean beef bowl recipe is beyond easy to create! All you have to do is add in the ingredients and enjoy.

While I love baking desserts, I’m not a fan of cooking. My fiance, on the other hand, absolutely LOVES to cook. However, on days that I’m treating him to dinner, I usually go with something that doesn’t take much effort. In walks this Korean beef bowl.

I found a recipe online some years ago and, after changing a few things up, found a recipe that I have grown to love.

With ingredients like ground beef and brown rice, this is a meal that tastes so delicious without being horrible for your body. It also gives the right balance of savory and sweet with the combination of brown sugar and soy sauce.

Pro tip: If you are a lover of rice but hate waiting for it to cook (because brown rice can take up to 50 minutes to cook!), invest in a rice cooker! They speed up the process, make it easier for you to add the ingredients and forget, and can be used for other foods. They are definitely worth the investment!

How to make this delicious Korean ground beef bowl recipe.

First things first, you are going to need a large skillet, saucepan (or rice cooker), measuring cups, a grater, a knife, and a hungry stomach. Since this recipe does involve crushed garlic, it wouldn’t hurt to have a garlic press. Still, it isn’t necessary (however, it is life-changing).

Before you start anything, you’ll want to get the rice going. Depending on what type of cooking method and rice you use will depend on how long you cook. Almost all rice has the cooking instructions on the product, so follow that for cooking your rice.

Do I have to use brown rice?

Absolutely not! I personally use brown rice because white rice doesn’t sit well in my stomach. I also avoid white rice because it doesn’t have as much nutritional value as brown rice does due to it being highly processed.

However, it is your choice what you want to use. You can use any form of rice or, if you don’t (or can’t) use rice, you can switch for a noodle or quinoa. Any option will still taste delicious with this meal.

Once you have the rice going, this is when you’ll start cooking the ground beef. Just like the rice, you can use any other form of meat you’d like. I’ve never tried this bowl with any other form of protein but, if you do, let me know how it goes!

Start cooking your ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once it is browned and drained (if needed), you can start adding in your ingredients. You’ll start with adding in crushed garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil. Stir all this in until it becomes fragrant.

How do you know when it is fragrant?

Basically, you are waiting until you can easily smell the garlic. If you can’t smell it and don’t know when it is ready, just stir it for a couple of minutes before adding in the rest of the ingredients. Giving this time just lets the ingredients fully absorb into the beef so that it doesn’t get drowned out by the soy sauce.

Once you are ready, start adding in the soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper. You’ll notice now that it seems a little on the liquidy side. That’s okay! At this time, you can lower the heat and let everything sit for around 7 minutes. In this time, all that liquid should soak into the beef to get the right consistency.

When you’ve noticed that the liquid has properly soaked up into the beef, add in half of the chopped green onions.

Not a fan of green onions? You can skip this part! It isn’t necessary but does add a little extra flavor and texture to the meal.

Now all you have to do is wait for your rice to be finished! Once the rice is done, get a bowl and plate the rice, beef, and garnish with your sesame seeds and green onion. Seriously, it truly is as easy as adding these ingredients. When you first see the list, you’ll think it takes so much time and effort but, after making it, you realize just how simple this Korean beef bowl recipe is.

  • Knife

  • 1 pound Lean ground beef
  • 5 cloves Garlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsp. Freshly grated ginger
  • 2 tsp. Sesame oil
  • ½ cup Soy sauce
  • cup Brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. Crushed red pepper
  • 5 Green onions, chopped
  • 4 cups Cooked brown rice
  • 1 tbsp. Sesame seeds


  • In a saucepan or rice cooker, start the rice. Instructions for cooking will be on the packaging for whatever rice you've purchased.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook beef until golden brown (around 5-7 minutes). Once brown, drain any excess grease.
  • Add in crushed garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil. Stir until fragrant (around 2 minutes).
  • Stir in soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper. Turn down the heat and let sit for around 7 minutes or until the liquid has soaked into the ground beef. Once soaked, add in ½ of the chopped green onions.
  • Serve been over the cooked rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and the rest of the chopped green onion.
